In the wake of the bridge collapse, Atlanta traffic reaches new levels of congestion

In the wake of the bridge collapse, Atlanta traffic reaches new levels of congestion

Posted By The Weinstein Firm, LLC || 11-Oct-2017

Transportation professionals predicted that Atlanta traffic would worsen when spring break for public school kids ended, and they sure were right. Commutes for vehicle drivers and users of public transportation were significantly worse, and with the new bridge slated for completion in June, travelers are facing weeks of terrible commuting.

Are there any bright spots to the bridge collapse?

Sure! With many more people trying mass transit and transportation network options for the first time, these systems are likely to increase their ridership even when the bridge is repaired. Given that mass transit usage results in fewer cars on the road, less fossil fuel being used, less air pollution, and fewer accidents and injuries, this is clearly a step in the right direction.

How are Uber and Lyft reacting to the traffic situation in Atlanta and the region?

Uber is offering discounted rates to and from train stations, and has unveiled a flat-fare scheme, allowing Atlantans to pre-purchase UberPOOL trips for $2.49 per ride to many points across the metro area. Lyft is now offering a similar discounted service to train stations during peak hours. These new offerings are attracting new users and improving the options that commuters have during this difficult waiting period.

What are good options for Atlanta commuters in the meantime?

The Georgia Department of Transportation suggests the following resources that will help motorists plan their commutes:

  • Visit www.dot.ga.gov for the most up-to-date maps and information on road closures and alternate routes

  • Visit www.511ga.org or dial 511 for routing information or to speak to an operator who can assist

  • Visit Georgia Commute Options for additional resources and information about available cash incentives for using commuting options

  • Visit www.itsmarta.com for MARTA routes and schedules

  • Visit www.grta.org for information on GRTA express routes

Good luck out there, and stay safe!

We can get through this difficult time alive and well, if a bit frazzled, if we plan ahead, keep our cool, and be patient. Take it easy out there!
