Along with Sao Paolo and Shanghai, Atlanta has been picked as a participant
in the Safer Roads Challenge, launched by the
Together For Safer Roads Coalition. This coalition brings together global private sector companies to collaborate
on improving road safety, focusing on issues in road safety management,
safer roads and mobility, safer vehicles, safer road users, and post-crash response.
The consortium is comprised of IBM, UPS, AIG, Facebook and many other companies
who will donate their technology and expertise in building information
systems to identify safety issues and enact fixes.
How will this program affect Atlanta's streets?
Plans call for safety measures to be implemented along
North Avenue, which stretches across the city. As of yet, we don't know which sections
of the street could be included, or what the exact safety measures will
be. So the hope is that the challenge will improve safety along this corridor,
with the potential for similar safety improvements to be enacted in other
areas of the city.
Why was Atlanta chosen for the program?
Together for Safer Roads Coalition (TSR) is supporting the City of Atlanta’s
goal to reduce the number of pedestrian and vehicle collisions along the
North Avenue smart corridor. In 2014, the crash rate on North Avenue was
more than 200% worse than the statewide average for similar roadways.
TSR is analyzing root causes of crashes to forecast warning alerts.
How dangerous is walking in Atlanta?
Smart Growth America, Sunbelt communities that grew in the post-war period are most dangerous,
including Orlando, Tampa-St. Petersburg, Jacksonville, Miami, Memphis,
Birmingham, Houston, Atlanta and Charlotte. These regions grew rapidly,
with many low-density neighborhoods with wide, fast arterial roads. These
types of roadways rarely feature the facilities needed to maintain pedestrian safety.
