Statistics and issues related to Georgia school bus crashes

Posted By The Weinstein Firm, LLC || 27-Oct-2017

After reading about today's school bus collision in Atlanta in which 19 students sustained minor injuries, we wanted to review some of the statistics and issues that may be contributing to these types of accidents in Atlanta and across Georgia.

How common are school bus collisions in Georgia?

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics show that nationally, just .4% of motor vehicle collisions involve school buses. But since crashes involving school buses and other school transportation vehicles make big headlines, it seems that school bus accidents are more common. Given the recent horrible fatal collisions involving school buses in the region, we wondered what factors can cause or influence school bus crashes.

Factors that can cause Georgia school bus crashes

The article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution points out several factors, related to current state law, that can lead to crashes involving school buses. These factors include:

  • School bus drivers can be as young as 18 in Georgia;
  • Georgia’s laws do not require mental health checks for drivers;
  • Bus drivers are some of the lowest paid workers, resulting in younger, less experienced employees.

While collisions involving large vehicles like school buses often result in more serious injuries to occupants of the passenger vehicle, the fact that school buses do not offer seat belts for riders can also affect the severity of injuries.

School bus collisions are different than other types of injury crashes

After a school bus crash results in injuries or fatalities, the resulting insurance claim is always more complicated and drawn out, because there are more people, entities and agencies involved.
